FAQ's
WHAT IS LASER & IPL HAIR REMOVAL?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. We use IPL to treat a variety of skin conditions, including semi-permanent hair removal for the body and face.
Lasers are more intense and precise, which means they can be used to target very specific areas of skin, whereas IPL is generally used on larger areas.
Both IPL treatment and laser treatment work in the same way. Light energy is absorbed by pigment within the hair follicle, heating it up and damaging the hair follicle so that the hair doesn’t grow back.
Both IPL and laser need to target the hair follicles during a specific part of their life cycle (during the growth, or ‘anagen’ phase). Not all of the hairs will be in the anagen phase at the same time, so multiple treatments are needed in order to get the longest-lasting results.

IS IT PERMANENT?
This is a question we get asked a lot and the answer is yes, once we have destroyed a hair follicle in its' anagen stage it can not grow back. However, we cay not say 100% effective, so we prefer to say semi-permanent.
As the laser or IPL kills the cells that make the hair, a new hair cannot grow from that follicle, and the follicle will shrink and can even die. What we cannot do is treat a follicle that has no hair in it. If the area of treatment only has a few hairs i.e on the chin you may only currently have 10% of your potential hair growth. This means in the future you may make more hair in the other 90% of the follicles, but this hair was going to appear anyway and would have compounded on top of your existing growth. So on certain areas of the body on-going treatment may be needed.

WILL IT WORK THIS TIME?
There are many reasons for treatments at other clinics not working - hair suitability, type of equipment used, operator proficiency, treatment spacing and new hair in new follicles appearing. In most cases though, it's the machine. Our Lynton Lumina is one of the best in the business at hair removal.
AM I SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?
Most people are suitable for treatment. Best results are seen with people who have lighter skin and dark thick hairs. Dark hair is easier to treat as it has a high concentration of pigment. Fairer skins mean there is a bigger contrast between hair and skin. Blonde and grey hair can not be treated as there is no colour in the follicles.
HOW DOES IT FEEL?
Treatment sensation varies from person to person, but is often described as a light flick of an elastic band. Most clients describe the sensation as comfortable, moderate and tolerable.
HOW LONG DOES EACH SESSION TAKE?
The treatment length varies depending on the size of the area. Something small, such as top lip, will take 10 minutes. Something larger like a full leg or full back could be 90 minutes.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS ON THE SKIN?
The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and raised but this usually subsides within a few hours. We use cooling serums, ice packs and recommend a range of post treatment moisturisers. Adverse reactions are very rare but may include a small blister or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Only hair that is actively growing is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. A typical average number of treatments is 8-12, though it does vary. Treatments are conducted every 4 to 8 weeks depending on the area being treated, until a good result is seen.
Can i have hair removal if i have a tattoo in the area i want treated?
Unfortunately we can not perform hair removal treatments over areas where a tattoo is present as it can potentially lead to burns, blisters or skin damage.
If you have for example, a thigh tattoo and you're wanting full leg hair removal we would section off your tattooed area and treat around it. Then you'd just have to use another method in that area to remove the hair.
